Adventure Circus

Dreaming big

Have ever wanted to experience the thrill of flying through the air on a trapeze or master the art of spinning plates? Well you no longer have to run away to join the circus; you can now experience all it has to offer here in Perth with the city’s very own Adventure Circus.

Established in 2015, Adventure Circus was founded by local fitness fan Gemma Simpson who wanted to bring to Perth what she had found in other cities – aerial aerobics and circus inspired fitness. After securing space within Perth Gymnastics Club, and sourcing equipment, the adventure began and classes were offered twice a week. From the level of interest from people wanting to find their inner acrobat, Gemma quickly saw the potential to expand the business even further.

Within the first few months of classes being offered, Gemma was joined by fellow aerial instructor Stephen Armour and together with their growing team of instructors, they have built the business into something truly unique for Perth and Kinross.

Over the course of two years, Adventure Circus has moved into a warehouse studio in North Perth and has continued to add to its offering, going from adult only classes to including youth classes and most recently, to adding birthday parties and a popular summer circus school.

The troupe now teach a whole range of disciplines including conditioning and flexibility lessons, as well as acrobalance, aerial rope, silks, trapeze, hoop and cloud. For those who prefer to keep their feet on the ground, funding has been secured to start a weekly floor skills session, which will allow families to visit together to discover hula-hoop, juggling, spinning plates and poi.

For those who like to get on stage, there are performance opportunities, and in 2016, Adventure Circus’s debut (and sell out) show ‘Seasons’ was a marked success. Students have even gone on since to perform alongside Gemma and Stephen in professional performance work across Scotland.

What Adventure Circus represents is how a simple idea can have an enormous reach; what began as a passion project has developed into a successful venture that continues to develop and expand. The ambition of Adventure Circus knows no limits and the team are constantly thinking of new ideas in order to continue to build a well-received and respected circus company.

Since its inception Adventure Circus has built up such a good reputation that they are becoming a regular feature in festival and events in Perth and beyond. Bringing their portable equipment means they can set up in any open space and allow people to see just how accessible these types of activities can be. All you need to take part is the belief that you can do it and Adventure Circus will help you with the rest. And if you prefer to watch, make sure you see their performance work instead!

Adventure Circus is a prime example of how culture encapsulates more than just museums and galleries and how it can have a positive impact on people. It inspires people to get out and experience something new and exciting, and demonstrates how culture is about having fun.
