Perth 2021 Awards First Funding to Creative Community Group

A local community arts and culture group has been awarded £1,500 in investment from the Perth 2021 Creative Communities Fund. The Art in Mind project is run by the Perth Creative Community Collaborative (Perth CCC) and aims to increase the numbers of disadvantaged people participating in arts and culture.

The collaborative, which was established in 2009, is supported by a team of volunteers and staff from NHS Tayside, Culture Perth and Kinross and Perth & Kinross Council. Perth CCC now supports three local art groups and provides creative opportunities in the heart of local communities. The group works particularly with those most excluded from cultural activities, including people with long-term physical and mental health conditions.
The new funding will allow the group to stage a showcase event in May which will display the work of the groups, introduce more disadvantaged people to the project and secure long-term funding for the initiative. The event will follow a series of workshops that will see members create artwork based on the City of Culture theme.

Alison Robertson, Treasurer and volunteer at Perth CCC, said: “Creativity has a positive effect on wellbeing and having regular groups for people to attend not only helps to improve their confidence in creative abilities, but also provides an important social benefit which can help reduce isolation and loneliness.

“Plans are currently underway for an open day in May to showcase new work based around the City of Culture theme, and local businesses will be invited to come along and see the benefits that these groups bring to our community.”

Perth 2021 has invested a total of £50,000 in the Creative Communities Fund as a part of the UK City of Culture bid to support the work of communities and individuals. The fund allows people across Perth and Kinross apply for up to £1,500 to start a new creative or culture-based project.

Council Leader Ian Miller, Chair of the Perth 2021 Programme Board, said: “We decided to start the Creative Communities Fund to help inspire people to come up with innovative ideas, events, performances and exhibitions that would get local people engaged in culture. It was our hope that these projects could demonstrate what Perth is able to achieve when we make the resources available to local people to make positive change happen.”
“I’ve been very encouraged by learning what Perth CCC is looking to do in opening up opportunities for disadvantaged people in our communities, giving them an appreciation of culture and engaging with people who might otherwise not feel a part of the bid. This project is just the first of many that Perth 2021 hopes to award funding to, and I look forward to seeing what other fantastic projects come forward.”
Applications to the Creative Communities Fund are currently open to projects throughout Perth & Kinross. Application forms are available from www.perth2021.com which can be submitted digitally or by post.
